CBD in Cosmetics: Fad or Fabulous?

submitted on 26 July 2023 by healthandbeautylistings.org
It has been said, by a crazed and possibly enlightened individual, that if you throw a wad of cash into a room full of experts, they will find a way to associate whatever their field of expertise is with the hip, trendy, and profitable. Thus, we find ourselves in the strange and potentially magical realm of CBD-laced cosmetics, a place where science and witchcraft mingle together in the form of creams, lotions, and balms.

What is CBD, and why is it in my face cream?

For the uninitiated, CBD – or cannabidiol – is a compound derived from the cannabis plant. It has become quite the darling of the wellness and alternative medicine communities, being lauded for its supposed medicinal properties, particularly as an anti-inflammatory and neuroprotectant. And no, dear reader, it will not get you high – that would be THC, its psychoactive cousin. But why, you may ask, would someone dare to mix this mysterious green elixir with the potions we slather on our faces and bodies? The answer, as always, is both simple and complex: because it might just be the next best thing, or because it might be just another way to sell people something they don't need.

Benefits of CBD in cosmetics: more than just a pretty face?

Let's first dive into the alleged benefits of CBD-infused cosmetics, lest we be accused of being cynics from the get-go. As mentioned earlier, CBD is known for its anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. This has made it a popular choice for people suffering from chronic pain, anxiety, and other ailments that involve the swelling of the body or the brain. It is not a far stretch, then, to see how CBD could be beneficial for the skin, that largest and most gloriously visible organ we have. Inflammation is the root of many skin-related woes, from acne to eczema to general redness and irritation. The theory is that by applying CBD topically, you may be able to reduce inflammation and, in turn, improve the appearance and health of your skin.Beyond its anti-inflammatory powers, CBD is also believed to have antioxidant properties. This means it could help fight off the ill effects of free radicals, those pesky molecules responsible for aging and cellular damage. CBD's potential as an antioxidant has led some to believe that it can help combat the signs of aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines.

The dark side of CBD cosmetics: a load of hippie hogwash?

Now, as much as we would like to believe that rubbing a CBD-infused night cream on our face will make all our skin troubles disappear – or at least make us feel like we're in some sort of psychedelic dreamland without the side effects – it must be said that there is still a lot we don't know about the true efficacy of CBD in cosmetics. While there have been some studies conducted on the benefits of CBD for skin, many of them have been small and/or conducted on animals, which means their results may not be directly applicable to humans. And even if the studies were to be taken as gospel, they often involve the use of pure CBD, not the diluted versions found in many cosmetics.Another point to consider is that the cosmetic industry is notorious for jumping on trends and incorporating them into their products, even if the actual benefits of such trends are not yet fully understood or proven. It could very well be that CBD-infused cosmetics are more of a marketing ploy than a miracle cure, a way for companies to capitalize on the green rush without any real consideration for the consumer.

Should you ride the CBD cosmetics wave, or let it pass you by?

In the end, the decision to give CBD cosmetics a try is a personal one, and will depend largely on your own willingness to experiment and your trust in the claims made by the companies peddling these products. If you're a believer in the healing powers of CBD, then slathering it on your face may just be another way to enjoy its benefits. However, if you're skeptical, it might be better to wait until more research has been conducted and more concrete evidence has been presented – or, better yet, to focus on tried-and-true methods of caring for your skin, such as a balanced diet, proper hydration, and the use of sunscreen. As for me? I'll be over here sipping my strange brew of snake oil and essential oils, waiting while the experts argue it out and the consumers vote with their wallets.
