Are Used Endoscopes Equally Good Compared to Brand New Endoscopes?

submitted on 13 May 2016
If you work with endoscopes in any variety, you already understand how important quality is to the integrity of your practice. Whether for diagnosis or treatment, these precision instruments require proper education to use and regular maintenance to ensure they work at their best. Of course, what if you find that you are on a tight budget? Can you get away with purchasing used endoscopes or do you need to buy new? To answer this, you might want to consider what your particular needs are.

What Does Your Lab Need?
One of the first things you need to consider when looking between new and used endoscopes and how often your practice performs these types of procedures. If you happen to specialized in advanced endoscopy tests, you will likely be more inclined to buy brand new simply because you want the latest technology. Of course, just because it is used doesn’t mean it is inferior, so it helps to understand the difference between the two.

The Difference between New and Used Endoscopes
When your office regularly performs endoscopy procedures, you might be a little hesitant to buy a used endoscope. After all, you want to make sure that you have equipment that will keep up with your daily needs. Fortunately, buying used does not mean that you have to sacrifice quality. Instead, a used model simply means that it has been passed down from another lab. In some cases, this might have been damaged and refurbished to original factory condition, or in others it might simply have been sold because a newer model came out. If you need the newest model, you might need to buy new, but if your office doesn’t have the budget or you simply don’t use endoscopes that often, you might consider just sticking with a used model.

Saving Money for Other Expenses
Keep in mind, the biggest reason that many customers stick to a previously owned model is that they are looking to keep equipment costs down. Like anything else, buying brand new means that you are spending the absolute most on the product. Instead, getting something that is refurbished, lightly used, or simply an older model of the same great item could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Since it is unlikely to affect the actual treatment or diagnosis of your patients, it can help to conserve that money for other essential expenses.

When Do You Need a New Endoscope?
Of course, there are times when you might need a new endoscope instead. Perhaps your primary function is to perform the latest endoscopy produces and you need a new device that offers the most advanced features. Or, maybe the procedure you need to perform requires a type of endoscope that was only just released.

Still, most of the time you will find that used endoscopes are able to meet or exceed your needs while offering those lower price points. Ultimately, this results in little difference for performance between the two and a lot of difference when it comes to cost. This makes it easy to see why buying used is the way to go.
